Denmark’s western region leads in renewable energy despite local opposition

The western region of Denmark has made significant contributions to renewable energy, according to climate, energy, and utilities minister Lars Aagaard. He emphasizes that citizens from the Jutland coast deserve appreciation for their efforts in harnessing wind and solar energy.
Known for its strong winds, municipalities in West Jutland are leading in the deployment of wind turbines and solar panels. In 2023, the average Danish municipality generated around 140,000 megawatt-hours from these renewable sources, with Ringkøbing-Skjern municipality achieving more than ten times that amount.
However, there are local residents who oppose these developments, making decisions on new projects particularly unpopular. Many believe that other municipalities should also contribute more substantially to renewable energy generation. Kristian Borch, an energy planning lecturer, acknowledges the shortcomings in wind energy deployment in less windy areas.
At the interest group Green Power Denmark, there is a recognition that increased participation from various municipalities is essential moving forward, and many are willing to engage. However, the reality of community opposition often complicates these efforts.
In Dragør, one of Denmark’s least productive municipalities for renewable energy, local factors, including the proximity to Copenhagen Airport, pose unique challenges. The local mayor, Kenneth Gøtterup, notes that due to certain considerations, the municipality has opted against wind turbines.
Instead, Dragør is collaborating with neighboring municipalities to establish a solar panel initiative for public buildings. Nonetheless, the mayor concedes that due to their size and resources, they may always rank lower in renewable energy output compared to larger areas.
