Cockroaches and bedbugs are becoming more prevalent in Iceland, according to pest control experts. While cockroaches have always existed in the country, their numbers are reportedly rising, likely due to the increase in tourism. However, the more pressing issue appears to be with bedbugs.

Steinar Smári Guðbergsson, a pest control expert, stresses the importance of inspecting luggage thoroughly when returning from travels. He explains that cockroaches prefer to hide in kitchens and bathrooms and warns travelers to ensure they aren’t bringing any unwanted pests back home. “When you pack your toiletries or toothbrush, consider your bag and make sure it’s pest-free,” he advises.

Cockroaches have also started infiltrating older plumbing systems, making it challenging to control their populations as they can develop resistance to pesticides.

Bedbugs, on the other hand, have emerged as a significant concern. Steinar notes that his work related to bedbug infestations has increased significantly, from one call a week to five to seven weekly. He recommends that people dispose of infested mattresses instead of attempting to freeze them, which can often be ineffective. “Sometimes, it’s just incredibly difficult to rid beds of the bugs, especially from the seams,” he explains.

Despite the unpleasantness associated with these pests, the growing problem reflects broader societal issues tied to increased travel and tourism. Both cockroaches and bedbugs are gaining notoriety, making their presence known in homes and accommodations across the country.
