A new book is set to be released today, coinciding with the 50th anniversary of Geirfinnur Einarsson’s disappearance in Keflavík. The story began with a small report in Morgunblaðið on November 22, 1974, stating, “Man missing in Keflavík,” which hinted at the start of Iceland’s most notable unresolved criminal case.

At the time of his disappearance, Geirfinnur, a 32-year-old married father of two, had not been seen for three days. The investigation escalated as police linked his case to an unrelated drug smuggling incident and another missing person report involving Guðmundur Einarsson. Neither has ever been found, and six individuals were sentenced for their involvement in the murders, but it was later revealed that police and prison officials had mishandled these cases, leading to a partial reopening of the investigations in 2018.

Interest in this case has only grown over the decades, resulting in numerous documentaries, films, and podcasts, alongside roughly 20 books addressing the events. The new book “Leitin að Geirfinni,” authored by Sigurður Björgvin Sigurðsson and Jón Ármann Steinsson, promises fresh insights, claiming to reveal the truth about what happened to Geirfinnur.

The authors assert that witness testimonies that were previously ignored by the police could change the narrative surrounding his disappearance. Some witnesses recalled hearing screams and even seeing the victim on the night of November 19, 1974. As the investigation unfolds, questions remain: could there still be individuals alive today who know the truth behind Geirfinnur Einarsson’s fate? The authors are determined to bring their findings to the authorities, advocating for justice after a half-century of unanswered questions.
