Ronni Hammer steps down as mayor of Hvalba Municipality in Faroe Islands

Ronni Hammer will not be taking the helm of the Hvalba Municipality for the next four years, a decision he confirmed to Kringvarpið this evening. As the leading candidate on List B, which secured four out of seven seats in the Hvalba Village Council, he stated, “We had a meeting today, and it was agreed that someone else will become the mayor.”

Although he refrained from disclosing the new mayor’s identity, he noted it would be one of the other three council members elected on List B: Jónfinn Poulsen, Otto West, or Poul Laust Christiansen. Hammer expressed that while he wouldn’t have minded filling the mayor’s role, consensus was not reached among the four elected members regarding this decision, leading him to honor their wishes.

“I have received a great deal from my constituents, so I am quite satisfied,” he remarked. The election results revealed a tight contest among the four candidates on List B, with Hammer receiving 45 votes, Poulsen 44, West 43, and Christiansen 37.

List B won decisively, coming close to adding a fifth representative, but ultimately secured four seats to List A’s three. Hammer indicated that it would take a few days to finalize and sign any agreement. As the top candidate from the winning list, he is also tasked with convening the newly elected council for a meeting, but he has not specified when that will take place.
