Concerns are escalating regarding the future of the slaughterhouse in Blönduós, Iceland, due to the cost-cutting measures proposed by Kaupfélag Skagfirðinga, a cooperative that plays a pivotal role in the local economy. The municipal council of Húnabyggð has expressed alarm over the scant information shared about these restructuring efforts, highlighting the uncertainty impacting employees significantly.

Reports suggest that Kaupfélag Skagfirðinga intends to cease operations at the slaughterhouse in Hvammstangi for efficiency reasons, with all processing to be relocated to Sauðárkrókur. This decision implies that no sheep will be slaughtered at the Blönduós facility operated by SAH Products, which is owned by Kjarnafæði-Norðlenska hf. The latter was recently acquired by Kaupfélag Skagfirðinga.

The council has voiced deep concerns regarding the limited communication surrounding these operational changes. In a recent meeting, they underscored the drastic repercussions these decisions could have on employees, local farmers, and the broader community. They urged Kaupfélag Skagfirðinga to enhance transparency and treat those relying on the cooperative for their livelihoods with due respect.

Furthermore, the municipal representatives pointed out that the current ambiguity surrounding these decisions creates anxiety for the workers. Despite a public meeting where the changes were revealed, there seems to have been inadequate prior notice to the affected employees.

Kjarnafæði’s CEO stated that he had not been aware of the council’s statements until recently but clarified that no final decisions regarding the facility in Blönduós have been made, although various efficiency avenues are being evaluated as necessary.
