In a recent fire incident at the Nesbúi egg farm in Vogar, approximately six thousand birds lost their lives. The fire occurred late Saturday night, prompting the Suðurnes firefighting team to call for a tanker from the Grindavík fire department to ensure adequate water supply for extinguishing the flames. Notably, there were no fire hydrants in close proximity to the farm.
According to a duty officer with the Suðurnes fire service, there is no requirement to have fire hydrants in rural areas, which complicates firefighting efforts when blazes erupt away from populated regions. The officer indicated that fire safety officials will evaluate whether additional measures are necessary to enhance safety and improve access to water resources in such locations.
