This autumn, Finnish authorities have been investigating a severe drug-related offense involving an individual who attempted to smuggle nearly one kilogram of cocaine into the country within their body. The case came to light in September at Helsinki-Vantaa Airport during a routine inspection.

It was discovered that a middle-aged man of foreign origin had swallowed 100 capsules containing approximately 10 grams of cocaine each. In total, authorities confiscated 998 grams of the drug, which had an estimated street value of around €150,000.

The lead investigator, Kimmo Jauhiainen, emphasized the significant risks associated with smuggling drugs internally, noting that such actions can even result in death. Although all cocaine capsules were successfully extracted from the individual’s body, he suffered serious complications that necessitated an extended hospital stay.

The case is being treated as a serious drug offense, and the preliminary investigation is nearing completion. It is expected to be forwarded shortly to the Southern Finland prosecution area for consideration of charges.
