Left-Green Movement proposes ban on whaling and blood horse trading ahead of 2024 elections in Iceland

In preparation for the upcoming parliamentary elections in 2024, the Left-Green Movement has unveiled its key policy priorities, emphasizing a push for a ban on whaling and blood horse trading, as well as advocating for secure housing irrespective of one’s financial situation. The party aims to ensure affordable housing across the country by proposing the construction of 1,500 social housing units and implementing measures to stabilize the rental market.

Sitting party leader Svandís Svavarsdóttir highlighted the importance of prioritizing people’s needs over investments in the housing market, citing growing concerns about speculative practices that treat housing as merely an investment rather than a home for individuals and families.

The party is also committed to preserving the public healthcare and education systems, alongside proposals to eliminate student loans for healthcare professionals to encourage them to return home.

On environmental issues, Svandís stated a clear stance against whaling and blood horse practices, suggesting these industries should belong to the past. The Left-Green Movement is calling for a return to foundational values related to nature conservation and climate issues, advocating for significant actions needed to protect specific fjords from fish farming and to gradually phase out open-net aquaculture, in consideration of animal welfare and environmental protection.
