A significant majority of women in Finland report experiencing sexual harassment during their lifetimes. According to research conducted by UN Women Finland and a local magazine, an alarming nine out of ten Finnish women have faced such incidents. Furthermore, a recent survey from NYTKIS revealed that over ten percent of men believe sexual harassment or assault do not constitute forms of violence. Sexual minorities, particularly transgender individuals, are also prone to harassment, while men are not entirely exempt from these experiences. A 2017 gender equality survey noted that 17 percent of men had encountered sexual harassment within the previous two years.
As Finland enters the festive season, many flock to bars and restaurants to celebrate, but this celebratory atmosphere is often overshadowed by concerns about potential harassment or assault. Sexual harassment is defined as one-sided and unwanted sexual behavior, which can manifest verbally, non-verbally, or physically. In contrast, sexual assault involves touching that infringes upon an individual’s sexual autonomy.
The media is currently gathering confidential experiences related to harassment or assault that occur in bars. Participants are invited to share their stories regarding when they last faced sexual harassment or assault in such settings, along with details about the experience. Additionally, respondents can reflect on how these encounters have affected them.
The survey collects data regarding age, region of residence, and gender, assuring respondents that contact details will be kept private and used solely for journalistic purposes. All responses will be destroyed after use. Those interested can submit their information via email for further inquiries.
