Fairer distribution method could reshape local election outcomes in Klaksvik and Runavík

If a fairer distribution method had been employed in the recent local elections, the Republican Party in the capital would have appointed a council member from the Progressive Party, while the People’s Party in Klaksvik would have given a seat to the Labour Party. In Runavík, the leading list would have received seven council members instead of eight.

These instances are mentioned by sociologist and lecturer, Sámal Matras Kristiansen, who argues in a post-election commentary that the current electoral system is a “distorted distribution method.”

He emphasizes that there often exists a mismatch between the support a party receives in percentage of votes and the corresponding percentage of council seats allocated to them.
