A significant fire at an egg farm in Vogar, located on the Vatnsleysuströnd, has largely been extinguished, but the damage is extensive. Emergency services are maintaining a presence to prevent any resurgence of the flames, which are believed to have caused the deaths of thousands of birds.

The incident was reported around midnight, leading to a prompt call for all available firefighters from the surrounding region, along with a tanker truck from a nearby fire department. Upon arrival, rescuers discovered a considerable blaze engulfing the roof of one of the farm’s buildings. Authorities estimate that three out of six structures have sustained damage, although they managed to contain the fire and prevent further spread.

It is feared that at least 6,000 chickens have died due to the fire and smoke, impacting one of the largest egg-producing facilities in the country. Fire officials will be on-site through the morning to respond quickly should any flames reignite. Currently, the cause of the fire remains undetermined, and investigations are set to be conducted by local law enforcement.

The local fire department deployed around twenty firefighters to combat the blaze at its peak. Witnesses reported significant flames and thick smoke rising from the site, raising concerns for the chickens’ welfare. As of a recent update, firefighters have nearly extinguished the fire and are assessing the extent of the damage caused.
