On November 5, Mikkel Eskil Mikkelsen, a member of the Sami Parliament, resigned from his position effective immediately. The Sami Parliament was reportedly informed of his resignation the prior day.

On the same day, Mikkelsen was arrested and charged with possession of abusive material involving children. He has admitted guilt, according to a ruling from the Salten and Lofoten District Court, which determined that he should be held in custody due to the risk of evidence tampering. The charges stem from allegations that between April and July of this year, he shared and accessed materials depicting sexual abuse of children or content that sexualizes minors.

Last week, law enforcement authorities confirmed the seizure of several electronic devices related to the case. A spokesperson from the Nordland police district noted that Mikkelsen has since been released, as concerns over evidence tampering have diminished.

The investigation continues as authorities analyze the contents of the seized electronic devices, which are believed to contain videos, images, and chat communications that sexualize children.

Despite the ongoing investigation, no victims have been identified at this time. Mikkelsen’s attorney has stated he will wait to discuss the matter publicly until he has spoken with his client.

This case has significant public interest as Mikkelsen held a prominent political role within the Sami Parliament in Norway. Given his position as an elected official, there is a justified need for public awareness regarding any potential criminal behavior.

The police continue to stress the importance of addressing and reporting cases of child sexual abuse, highlighting resources available to victims and the community for support and assistance.
