Man from Sievi sentenced for manslaughter of father by Oulu District Court
A man from Sievi has been sentenced by the Oulu District Court for the manslaughter of his father. According to the court’s ruling, the man was deemed not to be responsible for his actions at the time of the incident. The prosecutor sought a murder charge, citing the exceptionally brutal and cruel nature of the act. While the court acknowledged these factors, it ruled that the behavior did not meet the threshold for murder as classified under the law due to the man’s severe psychological issues at that time.
As the defendant was considered not guilty by reason of insanity, he was not given a prison sentence. He has previously been ordered into involuntary treatment for his mental health issues. The court delivered its decision today, which is subject to appeal in the higher court.
The fatal incident occurred in Sievi nearly a year ago, on October 28, 2023. The defendant claimed that the altercation began when his 82-year-old father attempted to prevent him from leaving their residence. In a violent outburst, the man inflicted severe and varied harm on his elderly father, ultimately leaving him injured outside in freezing temperatures, where he succumbed to his injuries.
During police questioning, the defendant expressed that he felt compelled to act as he believed his father was a devil in disguise.
