Ikuisuusmedia launches as Finland’s first dedicated media outlet for death-related topics in Kokkola
Ikuisuusmedia has emerged as the first media outlet in Finland dedicated solely to the topic of death. Based in Kokkola, it offers journalistic content, obituary information, and allows readers to submit free death notices and memorials. The initiative was spearheaded by Tapani Postila, who conceived the idea as he explored new career directions within journalism.
Postila realized that there was a lack of dedicated media focused on death-related topics. He noted that similar platforms are absent, even internationally, where one can find both journalistic content and obituary announcements. With a long history as a journalist, Postila has observed a significant public interest in matters of mortality.
Ikuisuusmedia generates revenue through two primary channels: subscription fees and advertising. The latter includes partnerships with relevant entities, such as funeral homes and gravestone businesses.
Postila envisions a future where death notices will be entirely online, as he believes printed announcements are on the decline. He points out that online notices are accessible to a wider audience, regardless of geographic location, enhancing the ability to reach distant acquaintances more effectively than through local newspapers.
The media outlet has received a positive reception, with many people recognizing its unique niche. Feedback has largely been favorable, indicating that Ikuisuusmedia has successfully identified its audience and purpose.
