Candidate for Independence Party in Reykjavik wanted by Polish authorities for financial fraud
A candidate for the Independence Party in Reykjavik is currently wanted by Polish authorities. The police in Poland have issued a request for extradition, but Icelandic officials have denied this request.
Christopher G. Krystynuson, who holds the 14th position on the Independence Party’s list for the North Reykjavik constituency, was previously registered in Iceland under the name Krzysztof Gajowski. Under this name, he is wanted for financial fraud in Gryfino, a town in western Poland. The Polish police have confirmed that an arrest warrant is active for him.
In a statement to a news outlet, Christopher explained that the situation relates to a business he operated in Poland nearly thirty years ago, which went into bankruptcy and subsequently led to legal disputes. He moved from Poland before any penalties were imposed, which is why the matter remains unresolved there. He asserts that since Icelandic authorities have rejected the extradition request, he considers himself innocent according to Icelandic law.
The Independence Party stated that they were unaware of Christopher’s wanted status when he was offered a position on their candidate list. The national election committee does not review the eligibility of candidates when lists are approved. Instead, the Parliament’s credentials committee will address these matters post-elections, prior to the formal seating of members. Given his lower placement on the candidate list, it is highly unlikely that he will face any challenge regarding his position.
