Alcoholic beverage exports from Finland hit record €200 million, with projections of €220 million for 2023
The value of alcoholic beverage exports is setting new records, with over €200 million worth of alcohol shipped abroad last year. This upward trend in exports, continuing since 2010, has remained largely unaffected except during the pandemic years. According to industry estimates, this year’s figure could reach as much as €220 million.
Alcoholic beverages are forecasted to become the second-largest export category in food exports this year, following dairy products, which are exported annually for more than €500 million. Currently, the share of alcoholic beverages accounts for around 10% of the total food export revenue. A significant portion, approximately 70%, is generated from spirits, mainly produced by large manufacturers such as the state-owned Anora Group. Economists in the industry emphasize the growing importance of small distilleries, which have shown remarkable export potential.
The global recognition of Finnish alcohol has been bolstered by consistent successes in international competitions. For example, the Lahti-based distillery Teerenpeli recently secured the title of the world’s best whiskey producer at one of the world’s largest competitions, following a previous victory in 2020. Such accolades greatly enhance marketing prospects for manufacturers, making it easier to approach international wholesalers and retailers.
Teerenpeli’s CEO notes that while the past year saw a slight decline in exports due to economic pressures on consumers, he anticipates a rebound next year, projecting growth of over 30% in their revenue from exports. The company is also expanding its market reach through online sales platforms, with plans to launch e-commerce in China, where geographic challenges make online shopping more accessible for consumers.
