Plans to enhance recreational access to Vartiosaari, a small island near eastern Helsinki, are advancing following the approval of a new development plan by the city council. This plan facilitates the construction of a bridge aimed at improving connectivity to the island.

Chair of the city council’s coalition group, Maarit Vierunen, emphasized the bridge’s importance for both pedestrians and supply vehicles, noting that it would enable year-round recreational use of the island. The bridge is proposed to connect to Laajasalo at the end of Reposalmentie and is part of a broader strategy involving surrounding marine areas.

Additionally, plans include a water transport link that would connect across the northern side of Vartiosaari to Jatansalmi, significant if a permanent bridge is built in Reposalmi. vierunen suggested that a drawbridge could be a more suitable choice to ensure that boat traffic is maintained.

Vierunen believes it is possible to balance the development of recreational facilities with environmental conservation. The plan highlights the protection of historically and architecturally valuable villas on the island and envisions recreational areas near Reposalmi and in the northwest region, such as Kallioranta. Four temporary boat harbors are also slated for construction along the island’s shore.

Green party representative Amanda Pasanen expressed support for residents enjoying the island’s unique nature but warned of the potential environmental degradation from increased activities like mountain biking. She advocates for protective measures for wildlife, including the establishment of three new nature reserves totaling 30 hectares.

Eveliina Heinäluoma from the Social Democratic Party emphasized the importance of making the island accessible year-round while safeguarding its cultural and natural heritage.
