Severe storm disrupts Northern Iceland as rescue teams respond to emergency calls
A severe storm swept across Northern Iceland last night, prompting numerous emergency calls to rescue teams in the region. In Akureyri, pedestrians encountered substantial obstacles as fallen trees blocked pathways. Authorities closed walking routes near Glerártorg after large panels from a billboard were torn loose by the winds.
As the day progressed, winds started to calm, but residents have been warned of continued adverse weather conditions expected over the weekend. Locals are encouraged to secure their waste bins to prevent damage. Valur Þór Hilmarsson, a municipal supervisor, highlighted the responsibility of residents to anchor their bins amidst such conditions. Those unable to locate their missing bins are assured that all will be collected at Terra’s reception center.
The storm caused significant damage at Sólskógur, a plant nursery in Kjarnaskógur, where many greenhouse structures were compromised. The owner described the chaotic scene as reminiscent of an airstrike, with plastic coverings torn from numerous greenhouses, leaving delicate plants exposed to the elements. The estimated damage is in the millions, as comprehensive repairs are required for the affected buildings.
The police, in conjunction with rescue teams, worked to ensure public safety during the storm’s aftermath, prioritizing pedestrian safety as they dealt with debris and hazardous conditions in the affected areas.
