Icelandic politician apologizes for past derogatory remarks about women in Reykjavik
A prominent Icelandic political figure has publicly apologized for derogatory remarks made about women nearly 20 years ago under a pseudonym on a group blog. Thorður Snaer Juliusson, a former editor and candidate for the Social Democratic Party in Reykjavik, acknowledged his writings during an interview, admitting the comments were disrespectful.
Juliusson, who recently stepped down from his editorial role, is currently placing third on his party’s candidate list ahead of the parliamentary elections scheduled for November 30. His past blog posts resurfaced following a complaint made to the ethical committee of the Icelandic Journalists’ Association by a CEO citing harmful remarks about drug use and character.
In the blog posts, Juliusson referred to women in disparaging terms, labeling them as cunning and ruthless while also acknowledging their intelligence. He expressed remorse for these writings, which he attributed to a youthful mindset at the time, stating that he has grown and learned since then. He clarified that his current beliefs do not align with those past views.
Critics have since pointed out a perceived lack of sincerity in his apology, highlighting that he had been reporting in media during the same timeframe. A fellow journalist commented on the complexities of male feminists who appear supportive while still harboring condescending attitudes.
Juliusson’s comments and the subsequent apology serve as a stark reminder of the changing perceptions of gender discourse over the years in Iceland and reflect a growing demand for accountability among public figures.
