Residents in Finnish municipalities tend to have a more skeptical view of their local decision-makers and the decision-making process rather than a trusting one, according to recent findings from a municipal study. Trust levels vary significantly from one municipality to another, influenced by residents’ perceptions of factors such as financial management, fairness in decision-making, and transparency in communication.
The study reveals that larger municipalities often face greater challenges in gaining residents’ trust compared to smaller ones. The 2024 municipal survey, conducted between May and June, gathered responses from approximately 10,500 individuals across 46 municipalities.
Overall, the findings highlight the importance of effective governance, as residents assess the competence of local authorities based on their experiences and the perceived integrity of processes. Enhancing communication and demonstrating accountability might be key strategies for local leaders looking to bridge the trust gap with their constituents.
