There has been palpable tension until the last moment in Tórshavn.
Early indications showed that Elsa Berg had received a significant number of votes, while the current mayor, Heðin Mortensen, did not garner as many as in the previous election. The distribution of votes among the various parties revealed interesting developments.
Berg announced early in the evening her intention to pursue the mayoral position, but nothing is finalized until all votes are counted. As the ballots were being tallied, negotiations commenced at the polling station.
It remains uncertain how the coalition will be structured and whether Elsa Berg and her party, the Republican Party, will form a majority in Tórshavn City Council. While the Republican Party emerged as the largest party with four representatives, a coalition requires at least seven members to be established. Based on live news coverage, it appears that this may be a challenging endeavor for Berg and her party.
A significant change is unfolding within the city council, as several new names appear on the list. Høgni Vilhelmsen, Heidi Lava Elgeirsdóttir, Anja Maria Hammer Weyhe, Bergur Robert Dam Jensen, Annita á Fríðriksmørk, and Guttormur í Skála are all newcomers to the council.
