Tensions rise as Elsa Berg seeks mayoral position in Tórshavn

Tensions ran high until the final moments at the ballot station in Tórshavn.

It became apparent early on that Elsa Berg had garnered a significant number of votes, while the incumbent mayor, Heðin Mortensen, had received fewer votes than in the previous election. The distribution of votes across various parties indicated a notable shift.

Elsa Berg expressed her intention to pursue the mayoral position early in the evening, yet emphasized that nothing is confirmed until everything is finalized. As the ballots were being counted, negotiations concerning the coalition began unfolding at the polling station.

The specifics regarding the new coalition remain uncertain, including whether Elsa Berg and her party, Tjóðveldi, can secure a majority within the municipal council of Tórshavn. Although Tjóðveldi emerged as the largest party, obtaining four representatives, a total of seven members is required to form a coalition. Judging by reports, it appears that this could prove challenging for Berg and her party.

The municipal council is undergoing significant changes, marked by the introduction of several new names. Notable newcomers include Høgni Vilhelmsen, Heidi Lava Elgeirsdóttir, Anja Maria Hammer Weyhe, Bergur Robert Dam Jensen, and Guttormur í Skála, all of whom are stepping into roles they have not held before in the municipal council.
