Nearly 80 percent of men believe that they should actively confront disrespectful and objectifying language directed at women. This insight comes from a recent survey exploring men’s attitudes towards violence against women. Alarmingly, the same study revealed that one in four men aged 18 to 35 think that a woman can deserve violence based on her clothing or behavior.
Students in Hämeenlinna, interviewed for their reactions, express a strong sense of duty to address such comments. Miko Jarho, a student of HVAC technology, insists on intervening if he witnesses a situation where a woman states she does not want to engage. He emphasizes the importance of dialogue first, followed by physical intervention if necessary.
Another student, Jani Hyvönen, supports this approach, suggesting that he would initially try to defuse the situation verbally, but if that fails, he would intervene physically to ensure everyone’s safety without intending to harm anyone.
In a video discussion, these young men reflect on the unsettling belief held by many under 35 that women can somehow “deserve” violence. Matti Kupila, a violence prevention worker, encourages addressing aggressive language with careful consideration for one’s safety. He suggests calling the police if necessary and highlights the importance of challenging disrespectful discourse, even among peers.
Kupila stresses the role of older men in setting examples for younger generations, particularly in how they engage in parenting after a separation. He advocates for open conversations about respectful treatment of women and emotional expression in various social settings, acknowledging that many men only seek assistance after exhibiting or fearing violent behavior.
