A recent discussion regarding the potential for a political party in Iceland to issue whale hunting permits has sparked controversy. An administrative expert indicated that remarks made by the son of a prominent politician, Jón Gunnarsson, during private recordings could significantly hamper the party’s ability to grant these permissions under current circumstances.
Expert Haukur Arnþórsson expressed serious concerns about the implications of the son’s statements, which suggested collusion with the party leader, Bjarni Benediktsson, to secure a favorable administrative decision and maintain party unity. According to Haukur, if the party proceeds with issuing whale hunting permits based on these circumstances, it could be viewed as an abuse of power, making the decision potentially appealable.
He further elaborated that while there may not have been any direct legal violations regarding the son’s comments about his father, the information could carry considerable political weight. However, he questioned the legality of the recording itself and its admissibility in court. Haukur believes that the content of the recordings could be considered valid, referencing previous rulings from the European Court of Human Rights that permit the use of illegally obtained recordings if they reveal necessary information about misconduct.
He concluded that the situation potentially points to corruption at high levels of government, an issue that is certainly relevant to the public.
