Aalborg Municipality proposes unlimited leave for parents of sick children amidst negotiation challenges

The ability to take time off on a child’s first day of illness has been a significant relief for parents. However, the situation becomes more complex when considering subsequent days of illness. Questions arise about how parents manage on the second, third, and fourth sick days, and whether unlimited leave would truly benefit families.

In Aalborg Municipality, there were initiatives aimed at allowing municipal employees to take leave until their sick child recovers. Unfortunately, these plans have encountered obstacles. The Municipalities’ Association has stated that such a request for unlimited leave must instead be addressed during collective bargaining negotiations, disappointing local council member Jane Østergaard.

She expressed concern that discussions have been limited to contractual aspects, without addressing the needs of parents or children. Østergaard and her colleague Helle Frederiksen have proposed unlimited leave for parents with sick children and have garnered support from local unions.

They emphasize the importance of addressing the issue of parents who may have to send their ill children to daycare or even take sick leave themselves. They aim to explore how such a policy could potentially reduce the number of sick days overall if children are not sent to school or daycare while ill.

Despite the setback with local authorities, Østergaard and Frederiksen are considering presenting their proposal to the national parliament as a pilot program, inspired by a similar initiative implemented by the energy company Norlys, which has provided unlimited sick leave for over a year.
