Gunnarsson faced allegations of political misconduct amid secret recording scandal in Iceland
Jon Gunnarsson has not addressed recent media reports regarding a secret recording of a conversation between his son and an alleged investor. The head of the Icelandic Journalists’ Association emphasized the journalists’ duty to report.
In discussions yesterday, Jon raised concerns about how his son had been misled to undermine his political standing. The supposed foreign investor recorded the discussion with Jon’s son, who is a real estate agent, and has been reportedly distributing this information within Iceland.
Jon Gunnarsson was said to have agreed to a request from the Prime Minister to join the Independence Party’s candidate list, in exchange for being able to issue fishing licenses to a specific company. His son, Gunnar Bergmann, reportedly made this statement during a meeting with an associate of a notorious intelligence firm, Black Cube.
The Journalists’ Association president stated that the focus of the controversy lies in the revelation itself, not in the methods used to obtain the information. She indicated that, regardless of the legality of how the information was gathered, the role of journalists is to receive and assess the credibility of news that serves the public interest.
Despite the serious nature of these allegations, Jon has criticized the journalists instead of providing direct answers. The president concluded that while the information could have been acquired unethically, the fault does not lie with the journalists, who are fulfilling their responsibility to inform the public on matters of potential misconduct.
