Heavy rainfall has caused significant flooding in Hestfjord within the Westfjords region, stranding four vehicles. Fortunately, emergency services have reported no injuries. Consequently, the Ísafjarðardjúpur road has been closed and will remain so until at least tomorrow.

The flooding resulted from a blockage at the bridge over the Rjúkanda river, which caused the river to overflow onto the road, carrying away debris. Rescue teams from Suðavík and Ísafjörður are en route to assist those trapped in the vehicles. Additionally, a landslide occurred above the Dýrafjardar tunnels, further complicating the situation, with another vehicle caught in the flooding there.

The local police have advised against traveling on roads that are beneath precarious slopes, as yellow weather warnings are currently in effect for the southwestern parts of the country due to heavy precipitation and heightened avalanche risk. The Icelandic Meteorological Office has indicated that the rainfall is expected to peak around 3 AM.

Authorities are monitoring developments closely, but it is challenging to gauge where additional landslides may occur, which limits the ability to close off more roads at present. Community members are urged to report any landslides to the monitoring service of the Icelandic Meteorological Office to maintain an accurate record of conditions nationwide. Reports can be made by phone or through email during office hours.
