A communications failure occurred on October 15 in the Eyjafjörður region and other parts of North Iceland, resulting in widespread service disruptions. The problem stemmed from a malfunction in the equipment of Míla, the telecom provider. As a precaution, backup power systems are being implemented to maintain connectivity in the future.
Míla has announced the completion of an investigation into the outage, confirming that the issue was linked to a failure in both the power generator and its control system. While the exact cause remains undetermined, the regulator is set to assess the findings further. They have dispatched the faulty equipment to the manufacturer for detailed analysis.
The outage affected all major communication networks, including phone and internet services, as well as TETRA systems used by emergency services, leaving residents of Eyjafjörður without any means of contact. There was considerable frustration among emergency responders, as their operations depend heavily on these communication systems.
Following the incident, it has been noted that various communication channels were reliant on the same backup power supply from Míla, an issue that the regulatory body is expected to examine in detail in an upcoming report.
The situation has improved since the outage, with assurances that repairs and additional backup systems are in place to prevent recurrence. Emergency communication reliability is now deemed to be enhanced compared to the October failure, which hampered essential services during the crisis.
