A controversial private intelligence firm, Black Cube, has reportedly been involved in gathering information about Jón Gunnarsson, a former minister affiliated with the Independence Party, as it relates to whaling activities in Iceland. This entity, operated by former agents of Israel’s Mossad, is notorious for its clandestine operations.

Black Cube gained infamy when it was hired by Harvey Weinstein to suppress media coverage of his sexual misconduct and silence his victims. Reports have stated that the firm also spied on journalists who reported accusations against Weinstein. Known for its deceptive practices, Black Cube specializes in establishing shell companies and impersonating individuals to obtain confidential information. Its services are reportedly accessible only to wealthy clients.

Gunnarsson disclosed on social media that a foreign individual misled his son in a bid to inflict political damage. The supposed investor, who claimed to be from Switzerland, contacted Gunnarsson’s son expressing interest in investing in Icelandic real estate. Following two months of discussions, they met at the Edition hotel to finalize the deal, which then shifted focus to Gunnarsson and Icelandic whaling. This alleged investor recorded their conversations and is reportedly attempting to disseminate the footage within Iceland. The investor’s website has since been taken down.

Jón Gunnarsson mentioned he was unaware of Black Cube’s involvement in this matter. He stated, “I have no idea about that. I assume this will become a police matter, as such espionage involving high-ranking government officials is taken seriously.” While it remains unclear who commissioned Black Cube for this operation, there have been indications in the media pointing to environmental organizations.
