During a gathering at Grindavík Church, Ásrún Kristinsdóttir, the town’s council president, reflected on the past year since the evacuation of Grindavík due to seismic activity on the Reykjanes Peninsula. She emphasized the importance of developing a plan for the town’s future, stating it is crucial for the residents to envision a comprehensive picture of what is to come.
Ásrún addressed the community, acknowledging the challenges they have faced, saying, “It is good to see you, members of the community, gathered here a year after our lives were disrupted.” In a recent report from the Prime Minister’s Office, it was noted that undertaking large-scale reconstruction in Grindavík would be impractical due to ongoing uncertainties regarding the natural disasters.
She expressed a desire for collaborative brainstorming with architects and specialists on the future appearance of the town. Ásrún also highlighted the need to preserve and ensure access to Grindavík’s historical sites, emphasizing that the community’s narrative must be constructed from the perspective of its residents and stakeholders.
Additionally, Ásrún discussed the installation of the artwork “Light of Hope,” which was illuminated during the event. The piece, featuring the merman from Grindavík’s emblem, symbolizes the optimism and resilience shown by its residents even in tough times. It represents the town’s past, present, and future and was created in partnership with local artists and architects.
