Concerns are growing over the deteriorating state of Helsinki Arena, which has been left without maintenance due to Russia-related sanctions. Electricity, heating, and water services were cut off in early September following unpaid bills. Prior to the sanctions, the Jokerit ice hockey team was renting office space in the arena but has since ceased usage, though they have been retrieving their belongings. According to Jokerit’s chairman Mikko Saarni, the latest collection of items occurred about two weeks ago. He learned afterward that although there wasn’t any water on the floors, it was evident the building was not being used. Saarni noted a bad smell inside, raising further alarms about the condition of the arena.

The Finnish national ice hockey team also utilized the arena’s facilities before its closure. However, they have reported no access to rented spaces or storage at the arena, leaving them unaware of its current state. Managed by Helsinki Halli Oy, the arena has been closed since late February 2022, and the management company has been unable to pay overdue electricity bills due to EU sanctions.

Juhani Hyvärinen, director of the Technical Industry and Trade Association, warned in September that freezing temperatures could cause significant issues for the arena, such as pipe freezing. Additionally, with ventilation systems failing, accumulated moisture could damage the building’s structure. Helsinki Halli noted in late August that the presence of ammonia tanks could pose explosive risks without electronic monitoring. On October 30, the City of Helsinki announced plans to terminate the rental agreement and filed for legal action over unpaid land rent, emphasizing the urgent situation facing Helsinki Arena.
