In a poignant account from Oulu, Finland, a young girl has shared her struggles with debilitating tic disorders that emerged after contracting COVID-19 a year ago. The girl, who remains unnamed due to her age and the sensitive nature of her condition, experiences uncontrollable movements and vocalizations, significantly affecting her daily life and independence.

Initially misdiagnosed, her symptoms began with intense coughing fits, leading to emergency visits at the Oulu University Hospital. As the cough subsided, other tic symptoms manifested, including mouth clicks and rapid blinking. According to her father, the changes in her health were sudden and drastic, describing it as if “the child changed overnight.”

Now, the girl faces severe restrictions on her freedom, unable to socialize with friends or participate in sports—activities she cherished since childhood. She attends school for just over two hours a day in isolation from her classmates. As she describes in a video, the most frustrating aspect is the memory loss and inability to communicate properly due to the ongoing tics.
