British company Bilt Tek is set to open a data center in the Veitsiluoto area of Kemi early next year. The facility will be located in the former premises of Stora Enso’s paper mill. Jussi Yli-Niemi, director at Barona, the staffing agency responsible for hiring Bilt Tek’s employees, stated that the company will initially employ 22 people.
According to Yli-Niemi, the data center can be launched on a tight schedule since no new construction is necessary. The centers have been prefabricated in 40-foot shipping containers, which will be transported to Kemi by freight ship. The Kemi data center will provide computing services to its clients, including specialized services related to bitcoin mining, as indicated on the company’s website.
The data center in Kemi will have a capacity of 70 megawatts, making it relatively large. In evaluating data center size, power (MW) is a critical indicator, as it indicates how much electricity the center can use to support its equipment and operations. Small to medium-sized data centers may consume only a few megawatts, while large commercial data centers, such as those used by major tech firms, can utilize dozens or even hundreds of megawatts.
Bilt Tek, a recently established company founded last year, also operates a smaller data center in Uruguay. Work in Kemi will be carried out continuously in shifts. Positions available include production manager, shift supervisors, ICT, mechanical, and shift coordinators, as well as administrative and staffing coordinators. Yli-Niemi mentioned that prior experience in data centers is not required for these roles, although the production manager should have a technical background, knowledge of electricity and ICT, or industrial production expertise. Good problem-solving skills will be beneficial for all positions.
