A severe storm is currently sweeping across Iceland, with high winds and weather warnings affecting most of the country. The Westfjords and North Iceland are experiencing strong gales and potential blizzards, leading authorities to advise against travel in the northern regions this afternoon.

In Grundarfjörður, a tent structure near the harbor has sustained significant damage, with little of its roof and walls remaining. Rescue teams are working to secure what remains to prevent further destruction. Photographs captured the scene where the winds were so fierce that the tent began to tear apart.

As of midday, orange weather warnings have been issued for various areas, including Patreksfjörður, where the sea is rough and the skies darken. All domestic flights were canceled by noon due to the deteriorating conditions, and numerous bus services have also been suspended.

As wind gusts reached alarming speeds of up to 41 meters per second on some routes, there are ongoing concerns about landslides in steep areas and rockfalls due to saturated ground conditions. Authorities on the Westfjords have warned of possible road closures and are urging caution for anyone on the roads.

Local police are recommending that residents avoid travel after noon due to anticipated rain and sleet, particularly in regions expected to face the brunt of the storm later today. Land and sea transport continue to be heavily affected nationwide as the storm progresses.
