A wolf that had been roaming the backyards at the border of Kajaani and Sotkamo has been shot dead. The Finnish Wildlife Agency granted an exceptional license for the culling of one wolf on October 30. According to Game Chief Marko Paasimaan, the wolf was killed this past Tuesday in Korholanmäki, where it had killed a dog and wandered around residential areas.

The deceased wolf was an adult male, and it will be sent to the Natural Resources Institute of Finland for further examination. The wolf was observed moving between the Eevala, Korholanmäki, and Kajaani urban areas. The license for its culling was also justified by the wolf’s unusual behavior; unlike other wolves in the area, it had been seen in populated neighborhoods and backyards.

From early August to October 29, there were 52 wolf sightings in the region, most involving a single wolf. In October alone, 10 sightings were reported in residential yards. Wolves have killed several hunting dogs in the Kainuu region this fall. The news of the wolf being shot was first reported by Kainuun Sanomat.
