The Icelandic government has approved a grant of 10 million Icelandic krónur to the Icelandic Literary Society to prepare for the 200th anniversary of the journal Skírnir, which will be celebrated in 2027. Skírnir is the oldest journal in the Nordic countries with an uninterrupted publication history, releasing issues twice a year. The Icelandic Literary Society was founded in 1816 at the initiative of Danish linguist Rasmus Kristján Rask and played a significant role in laying the groundwork for Iceland’s independence movement.

Skírnir features scholarly articles, poetry, and a variety of other content. In previous decades, it served as a newspaper with literary coverage. In addition to Skírnir, the Literary Society publishes academic texts and other scholarly works.
