Despite the waste fire in Rusko, school life continues normally for students. Following the strong smoke release from the energy waste fire on Tuesday, students were kept indoors during the first recess as a precaution. However, they are now able to go outside during breaks, although the situation remains closely monitored.
“I go outside to check the smell whenever I can, almost every fifteen minutes,” said Anna-Riikka Kivikoski, the principal of Annala School.
Tampere’s safety manager, Henri Rikander, issued guidelines on precautionary measures. “We allowed the children to go outside around noon,” Kivikoski noted.
Annala School consists of three buildings: Annala, Karosen, and Metsäniitty schools, along with the Metsäniitty daycare center, all following the same safety protocols. Kivikoski stated that the families of students have been informed about the situation, and currently, schools are operating as usual. “We are kept well-informed and can respond quickly if needed,” she added.
Teachers informed Kivikoski that some students expressed concern about the situation. “Yes, it seems that students were discussing it among themselves in class,” she mentioned.
This morning, the smell of smoke at the school had significantly decreased, and if no new information arises, the school day on Thursday is expected to proceed without restrictions on outdoor activities.
