Guðmundur Hálfdánarson, a history professor, has stated that the results of the recent U.S. presidential election were not surprising. According to him, Donald Trump represents change, while Kamala Harris embodies the current administration. He highlighted that the victory for Trump was considerable, even though polls indicated a narrow race between the candidates.

The Republican Party managed to secure a majority in both the House of Representatives and the Senate, making it likely that Congress will align with Trump’s agenda. He emphasized that Trump’s supporters are rejecting the Democratic Party and the sitting president, suggesting a significant trust issue within American society towards women in leadership roles.

Hálfdánarson pointed out that Trump now holds a clearer mandate than he did when he won the election in 2016. He argued that Trump will interpret the election results as a definitive endorsement of his policies. However, he mentioned that there was no single factor that guaranteed Trump’s victory, highlighting his subpar debate performances against Harris and some peculiar statements.

He attributed Trump’s success largely to the current American societal climate, noting that if another Republican had been nominated, the victory margin for the party would have been larger. Despite the win, Hálfdánarson predicted that Trump’s election would not significantly alter U.S. support for military actions in Israel, while cautioning that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky should be concerned about these outcomes.

Lastly, he expressed that Trump’s age could impact his performance, as Trump is approaching his eighties. Hálfdánarson concluded by expressing hope for the best regarding Trump’s governance.
