Aarhus announces increase in football stadium costs to 1 billion kroner

Aarhus Municipality announced yesterday that the construction of a new football stadium in the city will cost approximately 1 billion kroner, nearly 250 million kroner more than initially anticipated. The project, dubbed “Skovens Arena,” also aims to secure an additional 40 million kroner from the Herman Salling Foundation, while the involved municipal departments propose to source the remaining 208 million kroner from local budgets.

This significant increase has prompted Thomas Medom, the municipality’s councilor for Children and Youth, to suggest a reevaluation of the project’s scope. “We need to be responsible and consider downgrading this stadium project from gold class to silver class,” he stated.

The outgoing mayor Jacob Bundsgaard, representing the Social Democrats, pointed to factors such as inflation, soil conditions, and unforeseen expenses related to excess soil disposal as contributors to the escalated costs. He emphasized the importance of maintaining architectural quality, which has necessitated additional funding.

Medom criticized Bundsgaard for financial mismanagement, arguing that requesting hundreds of millions from taxpayers after previously assuring them that municipal funds wouldn’t be required was not an admirable moment for the outgoing mayor. “These funds should have been allocated to the elderly, public schools, and other critical projects,” said Medom. He expressed a preference for scaling down the stadium project to align with available resources.

Bundsgaard clarified that the final decision rests with the city council, asserting that the proposed financing will not detrimentally impact public welfare. He believes it is reasonable for the municipality to contribute to covering the increased costs in order to uphold the high standards of architecture and spectator experience. The city council is expected to address the proposal later this month.
