Researchers advocate music as remedy for attention issues in modern society
Researchers believe that engaging in music could help address attention issues prevalent in modern society. According to Minna Huotilainen, a professor of education and brain researcher at the University of Helsinki, the short attention spans associated with looking at short videos and scrolling through social media can undermine sustained attention over time. Merely encouraging reduced smartphone usage may not be effective, as overcoming detrimental habits often necessitates the introduction of alternative activities.
Studies have shown that music involvement is particularly effective in enhancing concentration, as it demands both speed and focus. Huotilainen explains that playing an instrument requires musicians to keep their attention on specific notes while simultaneously understanding the broader piece of music.
Playing music is also linked to improved learning abilities. Research indicates that children who engage in music activities tend to learn new concepts more quickly and efficiently recall information from listening to lectures.
Ten-year-old Olivia Tikka, a violin student at the Lappeenranta Music Institute, believes her musical practice enhances her attention. She notes that her music class has a significantly better focus compared to other classes. Fourteen-year-old violinist Paju Ropponen echoes this sentiment, stating that his music involvement has positively impacted his learning skills.
However, Marjukka Pola, a violin instructor at the Lappeenranta Music Institute with over two decades of teaching experience, observes a decline in attention spans among today’s children compared to those from 20 years ago. This change has necessitated innovative teaching methods, as some students can only concentrate for a short period before their attention wanes. Nevertheless, she remains optimistic that attention skills develop with practice over time.
