A new pedestrian bridge connecting the Santalahti and Pispala districts in Tampere has been officially opened, with significant attention given to safety measures, according to project engineer Jukka Rantala. The accessible route runs from the Santalahti tram stop, crossing the main railway line to Pispala’s main road. A lift has been installed on the side of an apartment building to navigate the 35-meter elevation change. The lift tower and bridge are accessible 24/7 throughout the year, with continuous surveillance provided by cameras, and a security service patrolling the lift tower during nighttime hours.

The steel structure of the bridge is designed to evoke the nearby Pispala shooting tower, with a gentle five-degree slope that minimizes slip hazards, even in winter conditions. Rantala notes that the bridge is equipped with underfloor heating to prevent icing, and its covered design facilitates winter maintenance.

The first pedestrians to use the bridge admired breathtaking views of Lake Näsijärvi, the Näsinneula observation tower, and the Pispala shooting tower through glass walls. Rantala explained that the use of glazing not only showcases the scenery but was also necessary since steel mesh panels could not be installed on the bridge crossing the electrified railway. The walls are made of durable polycarbonate, commonly used in safety and protective glazing applications.

Before the bridge opened, efforts were made to remove graffiti often seen in Pispala. Rantala indicated that initial cleanings would be frequent, expressing hope that the bridge would remain graffiti-free. He emphasized that the bridge is intended for both Pispala and Santalahti residents, with the view being the main attraction, not graffiti.
