Day of Swedishness celebrated in Finland on Svenska Dagen
Today marks the Day of Swedishness, known as Svenska Dagen, which is celebrated in Finland. This day was officially designated as a flag day in the Finnish calendar in 1979. The Swedish People’s Party initiated the celebration in Finland in 1908, originally aimed at fostering a sense of belonging among Swedish-speaking Finns. Over the years, the purpose of the day has evolved to honor the status of Swedish as an official language in Finland and to acknowledge the shared history between Finland and Sweden. Approximately 300,000 people in Finland speak Swedish as their mother tongue.
