Proposed law in Denmark could lead to closure of local bingo organizations

A proposed law currently under consideration in the Danish Parliament could potentially lead to the closure of local bingo organizations, according to the Bank Associations in Denmark (BFID). The primary aim of the legislation is to allow and legitimize bingo halls across the country, focusing on social interaction rather than solely the gambling aspect. Currently, the regulation results in a few providers monopolizing the bingo games, which the new law seeks to change.

In March, the government reached an agreement with all political parties to simplify rules surrounding lotteries and bingo, paving the way for the current proposal that has garnered significant attention. The proposal has already passed its first reading in Parliament and requires two more readings before becoming law. As it stands, many bingo organizations are operating in violation of existing laws since it is illegal to establish a bingo organization with the primary aim of offering bingo games. Although such organizations can run charitable lotteries, they must currently donate 35% of their turnover to charitable causes.

Under the new proposal, bingo organizations would only need to donate up to 35% of their revenue, which BFID warns could lead to financial losses and eventual closures. Long-time players like Leif Jensen and Anne Olsen express their concern over losing the community and social interaction provided by these bingo halls. The proposed law’s technical review will take place before its second reading, with some lawmakers expressing renewed scrutiny and concern for the social implications of the changes. The legislation is expected to come into effect on November 21.
