The deadline for Ukrainian refugees to stay in the Faroe Islands has been extended until March 17, 2026.

Bjarni Kárason Petersen, the Minister of Justice, has called upon the Danish Minister for Immigration and Integration to extend the temporary residence permits for individuals fleeing Ukraine by one year. The Danish minister has agreed to this extension.

Petersen has presented the proposal to the Faroese Parliament.

As of mid-September 2024, the Immigration Office reports that a total of 230 temporary residence permits have been granted to Ukrainian nationals in the Faroe Islands, including 132 women, 31 men, and 67 children.

Of these, 143 individuals have had their residence permits extended, while approximately 49 have left the Faroe Islands.

The Immigration Office further states that a total of 255 people have applied for temporary residence permits in the Faroe Islands under the special Ukrainian law, with 13 having received their permits. Many applicants have appealed their decisions; of those, one appeal has been upheld, while six individuals left the islands before obtaining a response regarding their appeals.

Additionally, the cap of 250 residence permits stated in the special Ukrainian law is close to being reached.
