Bingo associations face significant funding changes in Denmark as legislative bill progresses

In Denmark, bingo halls are not just places for players to win prizes, but also sources of funding for charitable causes, including sports clubs and hospital departments. However, new legislative changes are set to impact these associations significantly. Under a proposed bill currently under discussion in the Folketing (Danish Parliament), donations from bingo associations would be based on their revenue instead of their profits. This change raises concerns among industry representatives, who fear that many bingo halls could close.

Thomas Rojas Silva, chairman of the Bankoforeningerne i Danmark (BFID), which represents bingo associations, stated, “If we had to comply with the proposed regulations, we couldn’t afford to continue hosting bingo games, which would result in a massive annual deficit.”

The proposed law aims to simplify the current regulations governing bingo and lottery games, with the intent of allowing associations to focus on the social aspect of the games. Currently, associations must donate a minimum of 35% of their revenue to charitable causes. The new legislation suggests donating a percentage of revenue—either 15% or 35%—instead of profits, complicating budgeting for associations.

Critics, including members of the Danish People’s Party, have expressed outrage over the bill, emphasizing that bingo associations foster community and contribute to society. The bill, supported by all parties in the Folketing, is set to undergo further reviews before a final vote. If passed, it is scheduled to take effect on November 21, allowing associations to apply for licenses under the new rules starting January 1.
