The Archdiocese of Turku continues to suspend Reverend Tom Broberg of the Merikarvia parish indefinitely. Broberg was suspended from his duties in June, following allegations of inappropriate behavior and alcohol use at a confirmation camp.

The Reverend is suspected to have acted contrary to his official duties. An investigation request was submitted to the police on June 20th. The Archdiocese is awaiting the progression of the police investigation and clarification of potential crime charges. The case will be discussed again at the Archdiocese meeting in August.

The incident occurred in June at the Nuortenniemi camp center in Merikarvia. According to a decision made by Bishop Mari Leppänen in June, confirmation students have reported feeling fear towards Broberg and his behavior. The youth stated that Broberg’s lectures were partly inappropriate, and he made them uncomfortable with his intrusive questioning.

It was not merely the lectures and doctrinal content drawing concern. Students reported that Broberg’s language at the camp was generally oppressive or disrespectful towards their appearance. He allegedly made inappropriate remarks, some of which were sexual towards the girls, and others related to boys’ appearance. These comments caused confusion and anxiety among the students.

The decision also provides more detailed information about the suspected alcohol use. During the investigation, suspicions arose that Broberg consumed alcohol during the camp and was under its influence. These suspicions were raised by another adult present at the camp, the campers, and one grandparent who came to pick up their grandchild from the camp.
