A court in Lapland has sentenced a foreign national to a suspended prison term of one year and ten months for the sexual assault and abuse of a minor. The court chose not to impose a custodial sentence, citing the offender’s status as a minor. In addition to the suspended sentence, the individual was ordered to complete 60 hours of community service.

The incidents occurred last December in the restroom facilities of the Ainiovaara school complex in Ylitornio during a school day. At the time, the victim was 13 years old, while the perpetrator was 16; both were students at the same school. The accused has denied the allegations.

Under a new law that came into effect at the beginning of the year, sexual intercourse with a person under the age of 16 is classified as child rape. The situation came to light when the victim reported the incident to school staff. The Lapland District Court began processing the case on October 9 in Kemi.

After the incident, it was announced that the accused would not be returning to Ylitornio. The identity of the perpetrator has not been disclosed, as they are a minor.
