Cold winds generate storms in Gulf of Bothnia, warns Matti Huutonen in Finland

Cold winds from the northwest and north can rapidly generate storms, especially when sea temperatures are warm. This phenomenon occurred recently when a low-pressure system moved from the west to the southeast, allowing the cold northwesterly winds to sweep over the warm waters of the Gulf of Bothnia, gaining strength in the process.

Matti Huutonen, a meteorologist, explained that the atmosphere becomes unstable when warm sea temperatures mix with cooler air above. This leads to turbulence, swirling motions, upward drafts, and mixing of air layers. Consequently, stronger winds from higher altitudes can descend, delivering powerful gusts to the surface and observational stations.

Huutonen noted that while southwesterly winds can also be strong, they tend to be warmer, more persistent, and blow more steadily than their northwesterly counterparts, resulting in a slower transition. “These winds typically lack the sudden gusts and intensifications common in northwesterly and northerly winds,” he added.

He explained that the northeasterly winds carry cold air but originate from land, which prevents them from affecting coastal areas as dramatically. The friction with land masses diminishes the intensity of the winds. Notably, extreme storm-level measurements have never been recorded in Finland’s mainland regions, with the exception of mountainous areas.
