Twenty years ago today, one of Denmark’s most devastating disasters occurred at N.P. Johnsens Fireworks Factory in Seest near Kolding. A fire broke out at the factory, leading to a series of catastrophic explosions. A firefighter lost their life during the firefighting efforts, while both civilians and emergency services were injured. Residents of the nearby villa area were evacuated before the fire and explosions destroyed several houses.

A brief timeline of events from that day is as follows:

13:50: The fire ignites when an employee accidentally drops a box of fireworks while emptying one of two containers outside the factory.

14:02: Kolding police receive an alarm about the fire, which is spreading to the factory buildings. Firefighters arrive and discover that two containers are ablaze.

14:25: Residents in the vicinity are evacuated as the situation escalates. A water tanker is called in to cool gas canisters nearby.

15:08: The emergency chief orders further evacuations due to increasing risk of fire and smoke, telling all residents within a 500-meter radius to leave.

15:25: The first explosion occurs, killing the firefighter attempting to cool the gas bottles. This is followed by additional smaller explosions and a rapid spread of the fire.

15:36: Authorities sound a major alarm, indicating potential fatalities and injuries, and the evacuation zone expands.

16:40: A helicopter reports that several houses are on fire, with more at risk.

17:45: Three large explosions rock Kolding, clearly felt across the city.

22:50: Casualties are assessed at Kolding Hospital with some firefighters needing treatment for pressure injuries and smoke inhalation.

November 4, 04:47: Firefighting efforts are halted due to the uncontrolled risk of further explosions.

The disaster had dire consequences, including the loss of one firefighter’s life, the destruction of twelve businesses, and damage to 355 homes, 60 of which were completely destroyed. Following extensive investigations, no charges were filed against the factory, and the incident was deemed accidental. As a result, regulations regarding fireworks sales and storage were significantly tightened.
