Cathrine Toremo Johansen, a healthcare worker in Røyrvik, expressed her positivity about the recent salary increase of 100,000 Norwegian kroner for her position. She hopes that the attractive offer will encourage many to apply for jobs within the municipality, noting the appeal of working with a supportive team and a friendly group of patients.

Starting November 1, the municipality is actively seeking to hire more healthcare professionals by offering 200,000 kroner in bonus incentives for nurses and 100,000 kroner for healthcare workers. Mayor Kennet Tømmermo Reitan highlighted the significant interest from healthcare staff throughout Norway, reporting over 30 inquiries related to job and childcare opportunities even before positions were officially advertised.

Currently, Røyrvik has just four permanent healthcare workers and six nurses, relying heavily on hired staff from employment agencies, which costs the municipality around 1.6 million kroner annually for each hired nurse and nearly 1.3 million for healthcare workers. The aim is to save 400,000 kroner per position by employing locals.

However, the municipality faces financial challenges, having been placed on the Robek-list due to economic concerns, with expected deficits of approximately 38 million kroner this year, primarily for staffing costs. Concerns had also been raised about potential poaching of employees from neighboring areas, but the mayor reassured that there hasn’t been any outreach from those municipalities regarding recruitment.

Johansen supports the town’s initiatives, highlighting Røyrvik’s appealing lifestyle and outdoor activities as key attractions. Meanwhile, Mayor Reitan remains optimistic about resolving staffing shortages and notes potential housing availability for newcomers after ending contracts with agencies.
